European vs American (huge difference), every inside and outside bet, and why bet-sizing systems don't work. The simple rules for playing roulette honestly.
Roulette on Stake, every bet, every odd, every house edge. This is the comprehensive version: European vs American (big difference), every inside/outside bet, the columns, the lines, the d'Alembert trap, and why 36 colors and 0 is the most elegant house edge in all of gambling.
European vs American, huge difference
European Roulette (single zero, 0): 37 pockets. House edge 2.70%.
American Roulette (0 and 00): 38 pockets. House edge 5.26%.
That's a 2× edge difference from one extra pocket. Always play European.
Stake offers both. If you click into a roulette game and see two zeros, exit and find the European version. The extra 00 pocket is pure house profit with no additional benefit to players.
Why the house edge works
In European roulette, 37 possible outcomes: numbers 1–36 plus 0. If you bet a single number at 35:1 odds:
- Probability of winning: 1/37
- Payout on win: 35 (plus your stake back = 36 total received per 1 wagered)
- Expected value per $1: (1/37) × 36 - 1 = 36/37 - 1 = -1/37 = -2.70%
That's the house edge, embedded in the "35:1" payout on a 1/37 probability. Fair odds would be 36:1 — casinos pay one less than fair.
The 0 pocket is where the edge lives. If you bet red, black, even, odd, low, or high, you have 18/37 probability of winning (not 18/36) because 0 isn't red, black, even, odd, low, or high. That lost 1/37 is the house edge.
Every bet, every odd
Inside bets (bet on specific numbers)
| Bet | Description | Payout | Probability | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight | Single number | 35:1 | 2.70% | 2.70% |
| Split | Two adjacent numbers | 17:1 | 5.41% | 2.70% |
| Street | Three in a row | 11:1 | 8.11% | 2.70% |
| Corner | Four in a square | 8:1 | 10.81% | 2.70% |
| Six-Line | Two streets (6 numbers) | 5:1 | 16.22% | 2.70% |
Every inside bet has the same 2.70% edge. You can't outsmart roulette by picking smarter inside bets, the math is uniform.
Outside bets (bet on groups)
| Bet | Description | Payout | Probability | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red / Black | Color | 1:1 | 48.65% | 2.70% |
| Even / Odd | Parity | 1:1 | 48.65% | 2.70% |
| Low / High | 1–18 / 19–36 | 1:1 | 48.65% | 2.70% |
| Dozens | 1–12 / 13–24 / 25–36 | 2:1 | 32.43% | 2.70% |
| Columns | Vertical third | 2:1 | 32.43% | 2.70% |
Every outside bet: also 2.70% edge. All roulette bets are equivalent in expected value.
What changes between bets: variance
Just like Dice at 2× vs 10×, the choice of roulette bet changes your variance, not your EV.
- Straight bets (35:1): massive variance. Most rolls you lose; rare single hits pay huge.
- Red/Black (1:1): minimal variance. Close to a coin flip, slow bankroll decay.
- Columns / Dozens (2:1): moderate variance. Win roughly 1/3 of the time for 2× payout.
Pick based on your vibe:
- Slow grind: red/black or even/odd flat-betting
- Occasional big hits: straight numbers on 1–3 picks per spin
- Middle ground: dozens or columns
All have the same long-run expected loss: 2.70% of volume.
The "column roulette" strategy
Popular system: bet on 2 of 3 columns (covering 24 of 37 numbers with 1 column uncovered plus 0). Payout if either covered column wins: about 1:2 odds (payout 1:1 effective when adjusted for the stake split).
Why it "feels" like an edge: you win most spins.
Why it loses: the 2.70% house edge is baked in. Winning more often but smaller doesn't change EV. Over a long session, you lose 2.70% of total volume.
Some players report this system working briefly. Of course, variance exists. You can win at flat betting briefly too. Over many sessions, the math catches up.
Martingale on red/black
Same story as Dice. Double after loss, recover. Until the 8-loss streak wipes you out.
On red/black:
- Probability of 8 losses in a row: (19/37)^8 = 0.54%
- If you're 1,000 spins deep, expected count of 8+ losing streaks: about 5–6
- Martingale recovery after 8 losses: 256× initial stake. Max-bet limits apply.
Same outcome as every other Martingale attempt: statistically certain to bankrupt eventually. Compresses decades of losses into a couple of sessions.
D'Alembert, Fibonacci, Labouchere — no
All the same story. They adjust stake sizing based on wins/losses. None change EV. All introduce exotic variance patterns that mask the -2.70% drift.
Mathematically proven: no bet-sizing system can convert a negative-EV game to positive-EV.
Live dealer vs RNG roulette
Stake offers both:
- Originals (RNG) Roulette, 2.70% edge (European single-zero), verifiable via HMAC-SHA256
- Live dealer Roulette, Evolution, Pragmatic. Same 2.70% edge on single-zero, physical wheel being spun
Live dealer is slower (60-120 sec per spin vs 5 sec RNG), has atmosphere, and has a clear physical "this is random" story.
RNG roulette is mathematically identical but feels more sterile. Spin every 5 seconds or as fast as you click.
For verification: our Stake Verifier supports Originals Roulette — paste server seed + client seed + nonce to verify any RNG spin. For live dealer, fairness is "watch the video."
Dealer signature / wheel bias (ancient craft, mostly irrelevant)
Old-school land-based roulette had legitimate dealer signature (dealers with repeating release patterns) and wheel bias (physically uneven wheels favoring certain sections).
Online RNG roulette: neither applies. Every spin is a fresh HMAC-SHA256 output.
Online live dealer roulette: dealer signature is prevented by aircraft-carrier-level random release mechanics. Wheel bias is monitored by automated systems that detect statistical anomalies.
Any article claiming you can exploit these on Stake is misinformed. The old tricks are dead online.
Why you might play roulette anyway
2.70% house edge is worse than 1% for Dice/Limbo and 1.06% for baccarat. But roulette has:
- Slow pace, natural sessions don't grind as quickly as Dice auto-bet
- Clear, intuitive math, every bet makes sense instantly
- Atmospheric live tables — sometimes you want the vibe
- Social element on live tables, chat with dealer and other players
For entertainment value, roulette works. For "minimum edge" play, skip it for blackjack or Dice.
Session management
- Use outside bets for longer sessions: red/black, even/odd, dozens, columns. Lowers variance.
- Cap spin count (not time): "I'll play 30 spins" is enforceable; "I'll play for 20 minutes" blurs fast.
- Hard stop-loss: 30% of session bankroll. When hit, close tab.
- Take profits at +50%: winning streaks end; lock them in.
So what
Roulette is a simple, elegant, fairly low-edge (2.70% European, avoid 5.26% American) casino game. Every bet has the same expected value; your choice changes only variance. Betting systems don't work; slow flat-betting on outside bets is the most sustainable approach. Play Stake's European version, never American. Live dealer for vibe, RNG for speed. Entertaining game, but RTP-wise Dice/Limbo/Blackjack are better choices.
