Most players have no idea what they're actually up or down on Stake lifetime. The complete method for tracking real P&L, including the historical-price trap most tracking misses.
Most Stake players have no idea what they're actually up or down on the casino across their entire history. They know vibes, not numbers. This post is the complete method for tracking your Stake P&L correctly, including the historical-price valuation problem that 99% of DIY tracking gets wrong.
Why people get this wrong
When Stake shows you "You deposited $500 and withdrew $800, net +$300," it's using today's prices. If you deposited 0.01 BTC when BTC was $40k and withdrew 0.02 BTC when BTC was $50k, Stake's current display shows a different USD value than what you actually paid or received at the time.
Real P&L requires historical-price valuation. Every deposit and withdrawal should be valued at the date of the transaction, not today.
Example:
- Deposit 1 BTC when BTC was $20,000 (cost basis: $20k)
- Play, lose some, withdraw 0.5 BTC when BTC was $60,000 (value: $30k)
- Today BTC is $80,000
Naive math (today's prices): "I deposited 1 BTC = $80k, withdrew 0.5 BTC = $40k. Net = -$40k. I lost a fortune."
Correct math (historical prices): "I deposited $20k, withdrew $30k. Net = +$10k."
The difference is huge. You actually made $10k; the BTC appreciation is separate from your casino P&L.
The three components of Stake P&L
Your real P&L on Stake decomposes into:
- Casino P&L, the amount the house edge + your variance cost (or earned) you
- Holding P&L, the appreciation (or depreciation) of crypto you held on Stake
- Bonus / rakeback — rebates and promotional value
Only #1 (casino P&L) reflects how "good" you did gambling. #2 is market exposure. #3 is operational value.
Mixing these together (which Stake's default UI kind of does) obscures the real answer.
The correct method, in 4 steps
Step 1: Export your full transaction history
From Stake:
- Settings → Transactions → Export
- Pick "All time" or your full date range
- Export as CSV
You'll get a CSV with each deposit, withdrawal, and (optionally) bet history.
Step 2: Separate deposits and withdrawals
Deposits: USD value you put in. Withdrawals: USD value you took out.
For each row, you need:
- Date (YYYY-MM-DD)
- Asset (BTC, ETH, USDC, etc.)
- Amount (in native units, e.g. "0.01" for BTC)
Step 3: Value each transaction at its historical price
For each deposit/withdrawal:
- Look up the date-close price of that asset on that date
- Multiply:
usd_value = amount × historical_price
For stablecoins (USDC, USDT, DAI), price is $1.
Step 4: Compute the net
casino_pnl = sum(withdrawals_usd) - sum(deposits_usd)
That's your all-time realized P&L on Stake, in today-neutral USD. Positive = profit, negative = loss.
Why the manual version is painful
Sources of historical price data:
- CoinGecko: good, free but requires manual lookups per date
- CryptoCompare: good, free API but you'd write a script
- CoinMarketCap: historical data but paywalled for older dates
- Exchange CSVs: your exchange has deposit/withdraw prices but not matching Stake's deposit dates
A typical serious Stake player has 200+ transactions over their lifetime. Doing this by hand: 2-3 hours. Doing it wrong: easy.
The fast version: our P&L Calculator
We built the Profit & Loss Calculator to do this automatically:
- Upload your Stake deposits CSV + withdrawals CSV
- We look up each transaction's historical price from our local database (18 coins, daily closes since 2017)
- Output: all-time P&L in USD, per-asset breakdown, valued-transaction chart
Runs fully in your browser, no data uploaded anywhere. Takes about 5 seconds after the upload.
Our price database covers: BTC, ETH, LTC, SOL, DOGE, BCH, XRP, TRX, EOS, BNB, APE, CRO, LINK, SAND, SHIB, UNI, POL, TRUMP. Updated daily. Stablecoins (USDC, USDT, DAI, BUSD) are hardcoded to $1.
The "I left crypto on Stake for years" case
If you deposited when BTC was $20k and the BTC is still sitting on Stake now (BTC at $80k):
- Your Stake balance has gone up in USD terms (the BTC appreciated)
- Your casino P&L is the loss you took on that BTC while playing
These are separate. Example:
- Deposit 1 BTC at $20k = $20k basis
- Lose 0.2 BTC playing → 0.8 BTC remaining
- BTC today is $80k → remaining balance is $64k in current USD
- Casino P&L: you gambled away 0.2 BTC. At today's value, that's $16k of loss. At the time, it was $4k of loss.
Which matters? Depends on your question:
- "How much did I actually deposit vs withdraw?" → historical-price P&L (favored for true casino results)
- "What would I have today if I hadn't played?" → current-price P&L (favored for "what did gambling cost me in real purchasing power")
Our P&L Calculator shows both. You can see where you are under each lens.
Bet-level analysis
The above covers deposit/withdrawal level, the top-line P&L.
For bet-level P&L (per-game, per-session, per-day), use our Bet Analyzer. It processes the bet archive CSV and gives:
- Per-game RTP: which games are best/worst for you over your history
- Volatility: which games have the widest swings in your specific results
- Session analysis: patterns across individual sessions
- Drawdown metrics: worst stretches
- Chase-run detection: how often you stake up after losses
Bet-level analysis is harder than deposit-level because each bet changes your running balance, but it's also where the most useful behavioral insight lives.
Common patterns we see
After looking at hundreds of Stake archives through our tools:
Pattern 1: "I was up, then I wasn't"
Most players hit a positive peak mid-session, then give it back. Our Bet Analyzer's drawdown and session charts make this visceral — you can see the exact session where you were +$800 and ended -$400. Knowing this helps future sessions (we have a post on session control, the math is unforgiving).
Pattern 2: "Small wins, big losses"
Median session is slightly negative, but the worst sessions are enormously negative, chase-run collapses. The average masks the variance. Most players' total P&L is driven by a few disaster sessions.
Pattern 3: "I played more after KYC"
Players who verified KYC often grind more because the "friction" of cashing out mid-session is removed. Psychological, but visible in session length data.
Tax implications (jurisdiction-dependent)
Your casino P&L is often taxable income in your jurisdiction. Rules vary widely:
- US: gambling income taxed; losses deductible only up to winnings with itemization
- UK: gambling winnings not taxable (crypto may still be subject to capital gains on holding)
- EU: varies by country; some tax gambling, some don't
- Emerging markets: check local regulations
The separation of "casino P&L" from "holding P&L" matters for tax purposes too — the casino portion may have different treatment than the crypto appreciation portion.
This post is not tax advice. Consult a local tax professional for your situation.
The emotional benefit of accurate tracking
Players who know their real Stake P&L make better decisions:
- Up overall? Easier to withdraw and walk. Cognitive win.
- Down overall? Easier to recognize that the "one big win" fantasy isn't netting out. Harder to justify more play.
- Near break-even? Informs the "should I play" question rationally. Your history is an honest signal.
Many players have a vague sense "I think I'm up $500 on Stake" and the data shows they're actually down $2,000. Removing that illusion is the first real step toward either better play or quitting.
A sanity-check ritual
Once a month (or quarterly):
- Export your Stake transaction history
- Run through our P&L Calculator
- Note the number
- Compare to your gut feel, was you estimate off?
- Save the number somewhere (spreadsheet, note app)
Seeing your P&L trend over months is more useful than any single snapshot. Is it getting worse? Better? Stabilizing? Long-term, the trend is the honest signal.
Net-net
Your "real" Stake P&L is hidden behind currency valuation quirks that most tracking misses. The correct method requires historical-price valuation per transaction. Our P&L Calculator automates this in 5 seconds; the Bet Analyzer digs into per-game and session-level detail. The number it spits out is the truth, more informative than memory, more honest than Stake's default UI.
