Mines: The 3-Mine, 3-Tile 'Safe Grind' Isn't What You Think
Published 2026-06-27 · Tags: guides, math, fundamentals
67% hit rate, 1.478x payout, 99% RTP. Same as every other Mines config. The math, the streak question, and the one thing the setup is genuinely good for.
There's a Mines "strategy" that gets passed around chat like a secret: 3 mines, reveal 3 tiles, cash out. "It hits like 65% of the time and pays 1.5x, you can't lose over time."
Half of that sentence is true. Let's work out which half.
The board
Mines is a 5×5 grid, 25 tiles. With 3 mines there are 22 safe tiles. Each reveal is a draw without replacement, so the probability of surviving three reveals is:
(22/25) × (21/24) × (20/23) = 0.880 × 0.875 × 0.870 ≈ 0.6696
So yes, about 67%. That part's right.
The payout
Stake's Mines multiplier is the fair multiplier times (1 − house edge). The fair multiplier for a 67% event is 1 / 0.6696 = 1.493. With Stake's 1% edge the paid multiplier is 0.99 × 1.493 ≈ 1.478x. (Stake displays it rounded, which is where the "1.5x" comes from.)
Now the expected return per bet: 0.6696 × 1.478 ≈ 0.990. That is, 99 cents back per dollar. RTP of 99%, the same as every other Mines configuration, the same as Dice, the same as Limbo.
So where's the "can't lose"?
Nowhere. The win rate is high and the payout is low, and they multiply out to exactly the same 1% loss as a 10% chance at 9.9x. The configuration changes the shape of your results, not the average. Three-tile grinding gives you a smooth downward drift with occasional dips. Twenty-tile hero runs give you a flat line with rare spikes. Same slope underneath.
You can check this yourself on the Mines verifier: set 3 mines, pick a 3-tile pattern, run the deep dive across 100,000 nonces of your own seed pair. The hit rate will land within a hair of 66.96%. The realized RTP will land within a hair of 99%. Every time.
The streak question
"But I've gone 20 wins in a row on this." Sure. At 67%, the chance of 20 straight is 0.6696^20 ≈ 0.03%, so roughly one player in three thousand doing this will see a 20-streak on any given attempt, and there are a lot more than three thousand people doing this. Someone's always on a streak. It's never evidence of anything.
The flip side is the loss run. The chance of losing 5 in a row is 0.33^5 ≈ 0.4%. Rare. Not rare enough that it won't happen to you in a session of 300 bets; you'd expect it about once. If your "strategy" involves increasing the stake after a loss, that's the moment it ends.
What the configuration is actually good for
Low variance. If you have a bonus to wager through, or you want a long session for a fixed budget, or you just like the rhythm, a high-hit-rate Mines config gets you more spins per dollar lost than almost anything else on the site. That's a legitimate reason to play it. "It beats the house" is not.
A table, because people like tables
Three mines, cash out after N safe tiles:
| Tiles revealed | Survival | Paid multiplier | Return per $1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 88.0% | 1.125x | 0.990 |
| 2 | 77.0% | 1.286x | 0.990 |
| 3 | 67.0% | 1.478x | 0.990 |
| 5 | 49.6% | 1.997x | 0.990 |
| 10 | 19.8% | 5.00x | 0.990 |
| 15 | 5.2% | 18.98x | 0.990 |
Every row is 0.990. Pick the row whose ride you enjoy. Just don't pick it because you think the right-hand column is different.
